X-Men: First Class (2011)

I've seen the previous X-Men movies. The not-so-bad, the rather-watch-than-to-be-punched, the awful and the shameful one. When Toni introduced the idea of going to see X-Men: First Class (2011) I wasn't too thrilled.

I didn't exactly hate the idea. Matthew Vaughn directing sounded good after Kick-Ass (2010) and Layer Cake (2004). Michael Fassbender I remembered from Inglourious Basterds (2009). And James McAvoy I'd seen and liked on something. Therefore I thought it wouldn't hurt.

I loved it. Throughout the beginning I was still unsure, but at some point I noticed I'd been sucked in. The movie is fun, but doesn't try to be too funny. It takes a good distance to the previous failures, but doesn't forsake them. The characters are human and surprisingly real. Action looks great. Acting is almost overall solid. The bit of retro fits in. The chemistry between Eric (Fassbender) and Charles (McAvoy) works. They are kinda cute together.

The only thing that bothered me was the rushed ending. The fate of certain characters could have been left open. Luckily the rushed ending was handled still rather subtly and well, so it didn't bother me really THAT much. Oh, and I really don't like Kevin Bacon (I'm a vegetarian, you see).

Overall X-Men: First Class was quite brilliant. So brilliant we are considering of going to see it again. I wouldn't mind. Besides I'm now pretty smitten by James McAvoy. Hmmm. I should finally watch Children of Dune (2003).
